About the performance

Four choreographers and four musicians, with different artistic experiences and ideas, coming from different continents, cultures, and countries, are meeting onstage over a banquet of food. They talk, drink, laugh, dance, and prepare food together. A simple meeting that would be a starting point to a more complex choreographic and conceptual performance structure. 'Beytna' is an invitation to the home of the other, to the artist's profession and choreographic construction. It is an invitation that confirms diversity, touches on forms and situations of the past, and searches for a new rhythm, pattern, and logic.
Duration: 80 minutes

About the performance

What is freedom and why do we need it? Who do we need it from? The chase is perpetual, like a carrot on a stick. Our miniature wins are celebrated. Our flags and statues erected. But the cycle never ends. It is grotesque and gaudy and it makes for a beautiful performance. LIBERTÉ TOUJOURS is a feverish pursuit of freedom. If LIBERTÉ TOUJOURS means absolutely nothing to you, don’t stress. That is totes okay. It’s not for everyone. Cool, thanks.
Duration: 30 minutes

ZAAFARAN | Work in progress

Saturday 16th of April

About the company

MaHa Team started in 2013 in Tehran where Dance is forbidden and frowned upon. Without the presence of a single dance academy and from various backgrounds, it started out of a need that lead to the expression of the body, survival and creation.

About the performance

In 2015, Omar Rajeh was invited to Tehran to choreograph a piece for Ma Ha . Zaafaran is based on the idea of sacrifice; a notion very integrated in both our eastern cultures. This contemporary creation takes place on a Persian Carpet, a rich ground that reminisces a past, no longer present.

Duration: 60 minutes

About the choreographer

Ghida Hachicho is a dancer and scenographer based in Beirut. She graduated with a bachelor degree in architecture from the American University of Beirut in 2012, where she was granted several awards and recognition. She uses performance and installation to explore the overlap or intersection: between the architectural space and the moving body or the architectural body and the moving space. It is a possibility for space to become performance and for movement to become a new space. "Traces of Absence” is her first collaborative performance with designer, visual artist and teacher at AUB, Karim Farah.  It was recently presented in Beirut in 2015.
Duration: 35 minutes

About the performance

Can poems manifest as movement and visuals? Contemplations, memories and words, are no more than a gesture of the body, fleeting sounds and passing images. In the performance movement, moments, and time lost, observations of life within time, are distillations or isolation of moments or continuities. The body sculpts within space a time. Using rhythm, we attempt to grasp the imperceptible within movement's continuum. Extreme variances in speed put present perception into relation with its immediate past, moments dissolve into emptiness. Absence is reconstituted with traces of memory.

About the performance

For years Aïcha M’Barek and Hafiz Dhaou have been developing a specific grammar in order to undermine the censorship of the former regime. For their new piece, SACRÉ PRINTEMPS! they have edited this language of movement under the omen of the Arab spring and invited various musicians into the studio, including Sonia M’Barek, one of the country’s best-known female singers, in order to express Tunisia’s many voices. In the distant echo of Stravinksy’s ‘The Rite of Spring’, the choreography duo resolutely proclaim their rite of spring and stay true to their inimitable style and special flair for choreographic phrasing. M’Barek and Dhaou have a clear message: ‘Let’s liberate the spring!’
Duration: 60 minutes

About the performance

The piece is a choreography of tensions, exposing the relation between the bodies of those living today in a continuous state of alert. We looked at our Act(s) of Killing; the past murders and the others to come. This act that we deny, that keeps on repeating, that gives birth to the next one… In an attempt to create a condensed space, the artists worked on each detail as an event by itself, revealing the violence through their movement, their distance(s) and their gaze.

About the performance

TIME TAKES THE TIME TIME TAKES is a physical dynamic conversation through movement repetitions and pendulum leitmotiv that embodies mechanisms measuring time and space. A journey of dangling movements that burst into different encounters evolving towards a perpetual mobile. An ongoing wheel that suggests time as a continuum. This performance born out of the admiration for the rhythm and musicality that movement creates. A latent and constant rhythm that marks the passage of time. Based on a simple physical task such as pendulum, we create a sequence of complex mechanisms that are done and undone by the complicity of the five performers. TTTTTT is a poetic and choreographic manifestation, a physical, visual and sound exercise that explores space as a score within sound and movement. A perceptual experience of time, an eternal present rooted in materials and forms.
Duration: 55 minutes

TIME TAKES THE TIME TIME TAKES

About the company

Guilherme Botelho lives and works in Geneva since 1980. He initially came to dance in the Ballet du Grand Théâtre of Geneva and then founded his company in 1994.
The choreographer surveyed for a long time the impasses of life. For example, those of the office in L’odeur du voisin, of domestic violence in Contrecoup and of the bedroom in Le poids des éponges. His pieces were fantastic and heartbreaking all at once.
About his dancing, it was said that it is theatrical: it circled around the pathologies of every day life; magnifying also the personalities of the actors. The company Alias has created more than twenty pieces, received numerous awards, and has not only in Geneva established a loyal audience. In twenty years, the company has made a name for itself in Switzerland as well as abroad.

About the performance
During this edition of MOULTAQA LEYMOUN, 15 dancers from Lebanon and the Arab world will  work hand in hand with renowned choreographer Guillermo Botelho and company ALIAS on their already touring performance Sideways Rains. The Arab dancers will rehearse for 10 days in the Chouf Mountains at MAQAMAT - Beit El Raqs with the dancers and choreographer of the Swiss dance company.   After Beirut they will travel with the piece to Jordan and Palestine to perform in the Amman and Ramallah Contemporary Dance Festivals.

The dancers cross the stage, then start again, tirelessly. They march, run, fall, stand up, stop, leave, moved by a pure force and an inexplicable will to run. Towards what? Towards a common destiny, that seems to slip through their fingers. Passage after passage draws at once the human condition, the evolution of mankind and the transformation of the universe.
Duration: 60 minutes

" The Return of The Modern Dance"

About the performance

American Trajal Harell has created a new piece for six male dancers. In the history of dance the communication between dancer and audience has fascinated choreographers, dance makers and dancers. What is defining the communication between the one who dances and the one who watches?

About the choreographer

Cristian Duarte is a dancer and choreographer based in São Paulo, Brazil. He graduated from PARTS in Brusssels under direction of Anne Teresa De Keersmaker in 2002. In 2013 and 2015 Cristian Duarte was invited as a choreographer and teacher at DOCH in Stockholm.

About the performance

Brazilian choreographer Cristian Duarte creates his first work for Cullbergbaletten to new music on theremin and synthesizers by Brazilian composer and musician Tom Monteiro. The starting point for the solo is the idea of an expedition into the depths of a dancer’s sensory archives. In his work, Cristian Duarte has previously focused on the dancers' training history and movements they have created in previous works. He has worked specifically with the idea of mashup between the former and new works, between what is passed and what is to come, and how this coexistence affects movement choices of the dancers and choreography.

Performance in Beirut supported by the Italian Embassy in Lebanon and MIBACT - The Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism

About the company

Alessandro Sciarroni is an Italian Performing artist, working beyond the traditional definitions of gender. Alessandro starts from a conceptual Duchamp-like matrix, makes use of a theatrical framework, and he can use some techniques and experiences from dance, as well as circus or sports. His work tries to uncover obsessions, fears and fragilities of the act of performing, through the repetition of a practice to the limits of the physical endurance of the interpreters, looking at a different dimension of time, and to an empathic relationship between the audience and the performers.

About the performance

UNTITLED_I will be there when you die is a choreographic and performative practice on the passing of time born out of a reflection on the art of juggling.
The idea is to strip away all the stereotypes that are commonly associated to this circus art in the collective imagination to allow its exploration as a language. Practice, rule, discipline, commitment, concentration, are the building blocks of this work that force the actors to stay in the present time, no chance to go back, again and again and again.
Duration: 50 minutes

" UNTITLED_I will be there when you die" هو تمرين على مستوى التصميم والأداء حول مرور الوقت تولّد من جرّاء التفكير في فنّ ألعاب الخفة.

About to the artist

Nadine Abou Zaki is a sculptor and writer and holds a PhD in Philosophy from Sorbonne-Paris IV. Since 1999, she held solo sculpture exhibitions and participated in collective exhibitions and international sculpture symposiums. Her latest interactive art performance “Please Touch” was presented during Beirut Art Fair 2015. Her monumental sculptures are installed in front of the Ministry of Tourism (Beirut), the French Embassy in Beirut and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Beirut).

About the installation

« Please Touch the Trash » is an interactive performance that questions the concept of « waste » and its philosophical, social, economic and environmental dimensions. What is waste? What does it mean for us? Why are we that afraid of « touching » our waste? Those cumbersome debris of today’s technological world! Those neglected, unworthy and flawed substances, essential and nonessential!
Waste encloses within it the human trace of our intimate and collective history and reveals our relationship to the contemporary world. In this performance, visitors are invited to touch “living” waste that will be transformed into different shapes once touched. In this filling and emptying ritual, the waste that should vanish remains. It is nothing but the disposals of our history.

Physical introduction to The Return of The Modern Dance and Against the Current, Glow

Thursday 21st of April

The goal of a physical introduction to The Return of The Modern Dance, and Against the Current, Glow is to offer the audience a platform for the study of the productions’ physical content.
Both works were created with the principle that the body consists of an archive of tools. The body holds the experience of a lifetime and has the ability to cause bodily experiences through imagination and interpretations of others' stories.
In the introduction, several techniques are tried out through play, touch, movement and exercises to explore the body's capacity, knowledge, intelligence, reflex, gender and memory. The workshop is intended for participants between 10-70 years, non-professional dancers as well as professionally active.

Friday 22nd of April
11:00 am | Salle Polyvalente/ USJ

The workshop is from 11 am to 3 pm. It is based on the vocabulary of the work used in GN|MC creation processes and researches, tasks and points of departure to start opening up a world of imagination where body is treated from very different points of view. We search for mechanics, observe movement in order to multiply paths and approaches to the understanding of movement and body. We are interested in looking into the possibilities that the body offers and how we make it to arise those possibilities.

Saturday 23rd of April

The workshop is from 11 am to 1 pm. It will enable participants to work with senior dancers from Akram Khan Company and provide an exciting opportunity to work side-by-side with artists of the recent revival production Kaash. Kaash (Hindi word for “if only”) continued Akram Khan’s quest to build bridges between the worlds of contemporary dance and the Indian classical dance form Kathak. The starting points for the original piece in 2002 included the symbolism of traditional Hindu Gods as representations of rhythmical patterns and specific movement. This workshop will explore some of the techniques used to develop the repertoire, and Akram Khan’s distinct contemporary dance style drawing upon principles of Kathak, such as its gestural detailing, precision of line and focus, and extremities of speed.

Body, State, Sovereignty | How to talk about Dance?

Saturday 16th of April
10:00 am |

Sunday 17th of April
10:00 am |

Monday 18th of April
10:00 am |

Arnd Wesemann is the long-term editor of Germany's dance magazine “tanz”, gazing at contemporary dance in order to understand its meanings to society, as he did in his latest book, “Made in Bangladesh” (Amsterdam 2014).

Dancers are considered to be bodies aiming to have some fun for themselves, so private, or with other people. But as soon as he/she is on stage, the dancer is subjected instantaneously to the laws of public staging. The dancer should speak as a dumb character and thus expose himself/herself to judgment. His trespassing turns him to a So-to-say while risking the erect posture of men - and thus the sign of sovereignty.

Taking this risk can elevate him, showing him to be a particularly capable body, but can also belittle him as something unspeakable and thus dumbfounded.
Both acts contain an enormous political force, which aims primarily to the question of the sovereignty of the body and thus the freedom of our existence.

Let's talk about dance and dancers, let's judge - to say: what?

Writing with words and bodies

Saturday 30th of April

"For many years I was writing with words. The body behind the words was in-visible. Now I'm writing with bodies - with my body and the bodies of dancers. Connecting with nature despite the background sounds of constantly passing airplanes in the outskirts of London, two bodies establish a rhythm. Their perception of space aligns and contrasts with the openness of fields and tightness of tree clusters. Eventually, the contrasts inspires a revival of fallen tree bodies imprinted in the landscape, and a pause of stillness around those whose leaves have carpeted the muddy ground.

Faith continues to teach dance, perform, and choreograph. She is particularly intrigued by the intersection of choreography and global and social matters. Her current choreographic research explores the idea of material commodification expressed through dance.

The movie shares my research of contemporary dance choreography in Lebanon and Palestine, specifically from the Sarayett Ramallah Dance Company and Maqamat Dance Theatre.  In particular, it looks at the connection of choreography and traumatic experiences caused by conflict, and how this conflict informs the subject matter and processes of choreography.

This is a video dance of excerpts of the scenic piece TIME TAKES THE TIME TIME TAKES by GN|MC.  TTTTTT is a physical dynamic conversation through movement repetitions and pendulum leitmotiv that embodies mechanisms measuring time and space. A journey of dangling movements that burst into different encounters evolving towards a perpetual mobile. An ongoing wheel that suggests time as a continuum. A film recorded in places where the passage of time is visible.

Passionate of photography and programming since the age of seventeen, he starts to work in graphic design arts and devotes his evenings to programming. When the Pao started ( assisted publication by computer), he creates Hangover, a design print and multimedia company. With the  arising of internet, he creates 62 Avenue, a company specialized in websites and audiovisual production. In 2000, he decides to become an independent artist again and launches many animation projects, documentaries, video clips and advertising. In 2004, he makes his first documentary about a psychiatric hospital, then continued as a freelancer in France and abroad, with many movies related to social and artistic themes.

Why did I come to film in Beirut?   First of all thanks to " On Marche" Festival where I have met Omar, but also and most of all like he says himself: "I felt it. I felt that it is the time to do this. It is the time for people to know what is happening in the arab world."   In the spring of 2011, I came to Beirut with Bruno Ruffini for five days of shooting. When I arrived, I have immediately felted an energy, an enthusiasm, a creativity, a warmth. It was moving, talking, the weather was great. I have seen dancers in the heart of their passion I have heard their bodies and their thoughts in movement. So I asked: Dancing? What is dancing? Dancing today? Dancing here/ Taoufiq answered me: What is your dance? euh…. I did a 20 minutes movie. I thank a lot, a lot all the people that participated to make this film exist.

However for this fifth edition,  the young emerging artists invited to LEYMOUN decided to participate in a different way, by sending in pictures that aim to communicate and express the pleasure that dance brings to them, and its importance in their everyday lives.
